ISO 18587: MACHINE TRANSLATION POST-EDITING

ISO 18587 focuses on the post-editing process – the human review and editing of machine-translated material. The standard covers areas including:

• linguist competence and qualifications
• project specifications and client requirements

Importantly, we recognise that not every project is the same and we don’t take a one-size-fits-all approach to MTPE. Instead, we choose to work closely with our clients to understand their content, priorities and quality expectations before recommending the most suitable approach.

We know that machine translation can be a useful option for certain types of content, but it is not suitable for every project. Factors such as subject matter, audience, tone, accuracy requirements and confidentiality all need to be considered carefully. We also carefully assess the suitability of machine translation for sensitive or confidential texts, ensuring that security and data protection requirements are always considered as part of the process.

In some cases, MTPE can offer the right balance of speed, scalability and quality for language projects. In others, full human translation may be more appropriate.
